When the notice arrives
- Note the jurisdiction, case number, code section, deadline and officer contact.
- Photograph the condition described, from where the inspector would have seen it.
- Call the officer: confirm exactly what closes the case and ask about an extension if needed.
Choose the fix
- Cleanup, vegetation, vehicles: do it or hire it; keep receipts.
- Building maintenance: licensed contractor; ask whether a permit is required.
- Unpermitted work: ask building safety whether it can be permitted after the fact; otherwise remove.
- Cannot afford it: apply to the city or nonprofit repair program and tell the officer.
Close the case
- Request re-inspection; get the closing confirmation in writing.
- If an abatement was done, request the itemized cost and check the recorder for a lien.
- Selling instead: disclose the case and liens; choose a buyer who can close with them open.
